Not sure if i got all the details right, but since it's affecting me, and seems ALOT of other people as well, ill post what i can remember about this from the dell boards..
I have a Gen 1 (maybe 2?) Xps (no holes in Cpu Heatsink)
Anyways, system camw with 512 megs ddr 400 ram, via 2 256 sticks.. a while ago i grabbed 2 ocz sticks of 256 as well to upgrade to a gig.. the cas was lower on the ocz, and normally what would happen is the higher cas ram would run at the lower cas to match the other ram.. BUT becuase of a engineering problem with the intell chipset (and intell claims it's dell's fault in the bios, and they have been blaming each other back and fourth)... the xps's (atleast whatever Gen this one is), DROPS THE RAM down to 333Mhz in this situation..
thats total sh*t! Also, there is another related problem, can't remember the specifics, ill have to go back and search the boards on dell, but if you run 4 sticks of ram in the xps, as opposed to 4, some memory feature, for full speed gets disabled as well (ONLY in 4 Stick configurations).. ill have to look up again and find out what specific feature it is).. but i remeber cpuidz would detect it....
anyways anyone else in the same boat as me.. im kinda pissed that i spent like 170$ canadian to grab more ram, and ends up dropping my dam ram speed to 333 mhz (my system is a 800mhz bus, so it should be 400)...
so now basically i have the choice of leaving it for now at 333, and biting the performance decrease, pull out 2 sticks and sit on 512 megs again, or go fork more cash and buy 2 512 sticks..
Thanks dell, you won yet another satisified customer.. (sarcas,)
between this and all these cooling issues.. what the hell happened to dell! my dimension v350 was a pig, took a beating for 5+ years, not a single problem, and no design flaws.. a solid p2 machine... sigh...
