Got my new XPS last night and got Doom 3 up and running. I used the maximum graphical settings (1600X1200) and 4X AA with all the bells & whistles turned on. It looks and plays flawlessly with the stock Dell installed drivers. Someone tell my if and why I should upgrade them...

How sure are you that it plays flawlessly? Do you have fraps up telling you your getting 60fps? IF so, dont change em, but I highly doubt the dell drivers are that good. Even though its a synthetic benchmark, my 3d03 score was almost 3000 less with the tell stock drivers than the 4.8's that I did my best with. I am sure that performance carries over to Doom3. But, if your happy with the performance as is, keep the drivers.

So what drivers do you recommend? I know the 4.10's are garbage....

Should I unistall the standard Dell drivers before loading these beta drivers or can they be loaded right over the top? Been a while since I've had to update display drivers! In fact... I though I read somewhere recently there is a program that will go out and clean up any old video driver related .dll's and such before or after a new driver install? U.M.

Theres a couple ways to uninstall the ATi Drivers. Some people use a program called: Driver Cleaner. This is more for user's who want to use Omega Drivers, or if they are having issues. I just use the "ATi Software Uninstall Utility" in Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. For your situation: 1. Download Beta 8.07 Drivers(Omega is an option too) *Desktop is fine, but hold on to them. 2. Click the ATi Uninstall Utility in Add/Remove Programs *Click Change/Remove Tab. 3. Restart Once Prompted. 4. Click the Beta 8.07 Drivers: Click Express Install 5. Restart Once Prompted 6. Game On Some user's like using Omega Drivers which are optomized for gaming and benchmarking. Its really up to you. Good luck! T.RoW

Trow... You stated you weren't happy with the 4.10 drivers and Farcry. I was doing some research when I came across this recent test by SimHQ of the X800 XT PCIe. Thought you might like to read it... They got some pretty decent frames rates in Farcry using the 4.10's and didn't state they had any problems. www.simhq.com/_technology/technology_031a.htmlThanks for the install steps. I'll check out those beta drivers when I get home from work tonight. U.M.

I wasn't happy at all with the 4.10's. 1) My 3Dmark05 Score dropped 1500 pts 2) I had 3 seperate System lockups that required a hard boot. Then I went back to the beta 8.07's, and slapped myself for ever uninstalling them. There's a ton of people at Rage3D forums that had similar problems and issues. T.RoW

Do I uninstall both, or just the drivers and leave the control panel?? U.M.

Control Panel First, When Prompted Do NOT Restart
Then, Uninstall Drivers, When Prompted DO Restart.
Then Install New Drivers after Reboot.

Cool! New drivers are now installed. I just realized (while I was in there messing around) that Dell loaded a generic PnP driver for my 2001FP!? Updated that driver too while I was at it...
Thanks Again!

I tested the Ati, Dell and Omega drivers on my system when I first got it. I personally had better scores in 3Dmark03 with the Omegas.
