So I was bored yesterday and went out and picked up a couple of 80mm fans to see what I could do with them. Turns out that the Gen3 has a slot for an 80mm intake fan, so I put one there. The slot can be seen on Devnull's gen3 mod site as the mystery black box thingy. www.aloofhosting.com/devnull/internals.htmWith my other 80mm fan I rigged it as an exhaust fan between the sound card and video card. www.aloofhosting.com/devnull/case.htmBoth fans are 34 cfm and only 24 dba, so it didn't add much noise. That was pretty much it for now, gonna try to work on some more mods next weekend =) Edrob

Yeah, when I have everything going (which isnt that loud, so its usually like this), I can keep my CPU around 44 under moderate load (playing CoD fully maxxed out, and CS:S). I have to say the results are pretty good (though, I wouldn't reccomend any distrobuted computing with Prescotts, as the full load for hours on end REALLY heated upmy processor, even with a 26.5C ambient room temperature).

edrob,
re: the 2 cpu fans
you're saying the top fan sucks the air in, which goes through the fins of the heat sink to pick up the heat, then is ducted through the bottom fan and expelled out at the bottom half of the fan area since the top part has a plastic blocker on it.
hot air rises. so dell should have pulled in the air from the bottom fan, and expelled it out through the top fan so no air is mixed at the rear.

I concur (spelling?). I really think they could have saved themselves some trouble and put a fan on the ceiling of the case, as cliche as a blowhole sounds...

How about reversing the polarity of the CPU Fans.
make the top one expel the air, while the bottom one pulls in the air to cool the heat sink
Maybe this is all you need?

Do some pre-thinking and look afor any other openings in the shroud besides those associated with the heatsink and what airflow would be generated for the cooling of other electronic components. You can then try different things and see what works for cpu cooling while monitoring the other electronic components. The results will not always follow intuition as air can behave rather strangely at different airflows and fan configurations. GLHF

I'll try to post some pictures this weekend. I was looking for a way to put the fan on top, but could not figure anything out, which was why I put it between the sound card and 3d card. I didnt change the original fan config, I just added 2 more fans.
