Hi everyone I have read alot of this forum but I have never posted much. Now I seek help installing a new heatsink/fan combo. I recently ordered a bunch of new equipment I installed 2 vantec stealths at the rear and made my XPS super quiet. I got the Zalman VGA cooler but it seems like its not a fast install so I will do that later. I ordered this heatsink/fan combo. www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/frozencpu/cpu-cma-05.htmlThe instructions that came with it are not very helpfull to say the least. And it does not seem to fit at all into the CPU retention bracket for the existing piped heatsink. I managed to remove the old heatsink and remove the thermal tape. I replaced that gunk with AS5 so at least I did something good. After having a hard time reinserting the CPU (it was attached to the heatsink when I popped it out) I realized there was no clear way to install the new heatsink. It wants to be flush with the MB or very close to it so it can make contact with the CPU. So I had to reinstall my old heatsink and put the shroud back on. If anyone has any advice on geting this working I would be most appreciative. Maybe I should order the zalman one that so many of you have installed without problems? I would have ordered that one if I knew this was gonna be difficult. Can I install it with the intel retention bracket mentioned on this site?

The heatsink you have requires complete removal of the XPS CPU retension mech, as well as the use of a Backplate to secure the Heatsink.
The Backplate may also be a problem, as the XPS Mobo is attached to a "Tray", and may be a little to tight.
If you can send it back and get a Zalman 7000, youll be much happier, though it will require a New Intel Retension Mech. If you bought this at FrozenCPU, they pretty quick about RMA's to.

Thanks for the quick reply Trow.
Can I return it even though I have opened it and tried to install it.
As soon as I read in the instructions that I had to remove the MB I knew I might not be able to do it. Then I looked closely at the MB and could not find and hole to secure it from.
There was no mention of the complex installation in anything I read prior to ordering it.
Removing the MB did not seem easy at all.
I'm very happy so far with my Vantec stealths that I used to replace the rear fans. My system now emits a quiet purr as opposed to a roaring thypoon before. I really think there was something wrong with my cooling it was deafeningly loud even when idle.
I think my next project after I get the heatsink fan sorted out is to install come rounded cabling and maybe some blue cold cathodes ;D
I very competent at working inside my computer and love learning/trying new things I'm about to start setting up my VGA Cooler Zalman ZM90D-HP.

Oh yeh, Welcome to the Forums ;D Return the Item for Refund back to your Card, email and phone if you have to. Tell them product did not fit. Then Go back thru process of ordering New Item. On the Mobo issue, the Zalman Heatsink w/ Intel Bracket may be the best option. Go Herefor a Install Guide for XPS. Picture: DeezmyGal's Zalman Combo T.RoW
