I posted this in the Dell Forums, but I got pointed over here as well by a friend so I'll repeat it here.
------
Alrighty, going to try and be as detailed about this as possible, because I am completely stumped.
I have a new XPS Gen 4. It came with the usual assortment of garbage on it. I like Dell quite a bit, but good lord is it bloated. It had XP Home on it, and I promptly reformatted and upgraded it to XP Pro. Other than a glitch with the onboard sound (no sound card yet and the sigmatel advanced hd sound works well enough for now once I figured it out), all went well.
I decided I wanted to add a second HD to the computer, an 80GB drive to act as a storage device. The only drives I have, though, are IDE. No big deal, I just order a PCI Controller Card. Technically it's a RAID card but it's indicated that it can be used as a simple IDE controller.
Sooo. I insall the card, plug it into the HD, get power where power is needed and start her back up.
Here's the problem:
1) The PCI card doesn't recognize my SATA drive as existing. No big deal, I didn't really mean to use it for RAID foo anyway.
More importantly:
2) While my computer appears to recognize the existance of a second hard drive via the Device Manager, that drive refuses to show up in My Computer at all.
Under Device manager, I see:
Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 27DF
Intel(R) 82801GB/GR/GH (ICH7 Family) Serial ATA Storage Controller - 27C0
It installed the drivers correctly, the computer indicated that the new hardware and new harddrive had been found and were ready....
But nothing in My Computer. It's as if it isn't even there.
Help?
