Been thinking about this for cooling the VGA, but didnt find any good deals, yet alone in stock...until NOW! Check them OUT! ! !I picked up a ATi Silencer 4 (r420) and a 92mm Tt SmartFan. Im "planning" to cut a Hole in the Acrylic Window. I also plan to build a mulitple Rheostat control slot bar to tweak the fans. The window hole was just a matter of time, I couldn't resist! T.RoW

And for flavor... I also picked up a Pro ORB membership for 3Dmark03, saves time on running serious artifact testing and tweakage. Plus, its cheap and combat effective. WOOT! *wags his tail T.RoW

The stability and overclocking this card has out of the box is amazing. Ive researched many reviews that have pointed out that Powercolor X800's overclock to XT Speeds and Beyond with Excellent stability. Stock X800: 475/450 Stock X8XT: 520/560 Quite a difference, but the key is the 4 unlocked Pipelines. Ive run 3Dmark03 at XT Speeds in loops with Stock cooling, and I did NOT see ANY Artifacts. *Upgrading from 9800XT, that oc'd like sh*t, this is f@#$ing Amazing! The cooler will prolong its life, its a neccessity installment for what's about to take place in the "near future".....(HL2 Fool) T.RoW

PowerColor ATi X800Pro/XT @ 520/560|16 Pipes: *Without Window Hole ModTests Used: FarCry, ATi Tool Render Box, Repeated Loops of 3Dmark03: MotherNature,Troll's Lair. **2nd Round of Tests will Include: Doom3, Extended UT2k4 Session. Stock Cooling: Idle: 39 Load: 71-73c
ATi Silencer 4|AS5 Idle: 32c Load: 56c *W/out Window Hole Mod
Difference: Idle: -7c Load: -15c Check my current temps, CPU is what? Ive actually seen the CPU hit 28c when Idling! ;D The installation was a breeze, but theres was a slight problem fitting the V.Card because the Silencer 4's Backplate Interferes with the 92mm R.Exhaust Fan. It fits, but the Fan Pushes against the card. It may look a little off, but it wont affect anything. T.RoW

Will that silencer fit the PCIE ATI cards?

Not sure, but my guess is Yes because the ATi 4 is compatible with R420 Reference Boards.
Google it, tell us what you find.

*UPDATE*
Ive Cut a Hole in the Window and Added a 92mm Tt SmartFan. I beginning to lean toward a HDD Cooler/Fan& Temp controller because "piggy backing" taking place for Powering from the PSU.
This mod has kept my GPU Core below 58c, even with higher than normal ambients.
The ATi Silencer BARELY Fits with the Exhaust Fan. I mean SNUG! And the V.Card is just a hair crooked, so I may need to hack off a Piece of the BackHeat Plate of the V.Card so it will fit perfectly.

That is an excellent point, I dont want to do anything yet because I think a PCIe-specific cooler will come out soon for my XT

Any update as to whether this cooler does infact fit a x800 xt pcix card and not just agp? After installing a pci slot blower in my gen 3 case, I am still seeing 74% load temps on the gpu and 60% on the environment around the gpu. Actually not sure if the fan blower has helped since I didn't start tracking the temp until after installing the new fan.
Another thing, the gen 3 case sucks cause the only place to get power is from the one cord that supplies power to the 2 cd drives and floppy. So I have the fan blower piggy backing on the one cd drive so essentially 4 things are powered by 1 power supply cord. Is this a bad thing or power cords basically work the same way as what a wall socket does with a multi outlet surge protector? As in too much hardware on one wire leads to hardware failure or just not enough power to one or more of the stringed together parts?
I can only keep track of my hd and vga temps since the ell bios sucks. I definitely want to reduce my vga temps soon and that silencer is looking mighty good.

You have a lot good questions, and concerns.
The ATi Silencer 4 will fit ALL X800 Series boards AGP and PCIe, with the exception of some AIW versions.
The Silencer is a very snug fit with the rear exhaust fan closest to the VGA. Real snug, I dont know how that will affect your setup as I have a Gen1. Snug is an understatment.
Piggy backing off molex connectors is ok in certain circumstances. For instance, using a molex connector from a Burner Drive for Fans is better than a HDD, or VGA ANY day of the week. The power requirments of the fan will also dictate which to "piggy back" off of. In the end, choosing the right fan and wattage requirments can help avoid and head off any complications.
If powering fans is a concern there is always a Fan controller option, which would give you Ultimate control over your PC's cooling.
The Idle/Load temps your seeing are about the same as everyone with stock cooling, from X800Pro all the way to XTPE users. If your a gamer, then you should invest in a Silencer 4 and some Artic Silver 5.

To give you an idea of what you can do to insure a good, proper fit. The Highlighted Blue Area should be Hacked off. This wont effect anything except the warranty exchange you will never use. T.RoW

I just bought this silencer for my 3 Gen. I have the x800 but since it is Dell OEM, it is only 500/500. I now have it OC'd to 520/560 with the stock fan and have had no major issues yet. It runs @49c idle and @70-74C while playing Doom3, etc. My best 3DMark03 scores is 13101 with the Cat 4.8 Omegas. I'll have to see what happens when I get this new cooling unit.
Great site.

Damn! That is a righteous overclock man. With the stock cooling, I can't OC for anything, like 527/529 before I get lockups. I have a new card though, because something happened to my old one. That might mean more OC capability, but similarly it might mean less. I hope after I get this awesome mod that I can pump my card the same as you Hill. That is simply amazing. My best 03 score was 12,8XX with 4.8's. Niiiiiiice

I ordered my card with my comp but was shocked when I found out the clock speeds were 500/500. This is supposed to be an XT! A mod on the Dell forums told me to under clock it if possible. Riiiiight. I didn't invest in a Gen 3 to have it underpowered. Glad I found this site on Neowin. I have been looking for other XPSers since I bought this rig. My biggest problem is that I have this comp in my home office and it heats up the entire room. I am thinking about getting new adjustable fans but won't that just move more hot air out of the case and into the room?

My office is very far from my room so I am not worried about the sound at night, just the damn heat I usualy crank the AC but when I walk out of the office I'm freezing! I'll post my benchmarks when I install the silencer.

I just finished installing the Silencer 4 on my VG. I have never done any modding to any of my computers so it is safe to say I'm a Super Noob. I measured the rear heatsink on the card before I applied the past for the perm. install. I had to cut off a lot more than the other guys due to the HUGE green heat shield for the CPU. I cleaned off the old thermal paste and started to apply the new paste. Lets just say I ran out on the 7th RAM chip. I scrapped off the old paste from the OEM fan and I barely had enough to cover the 7th and 8th chip. I'm guessing I applied too much on the GPU? Who knows I installed the card in the box and the idle temp is 34C. This is a huge improvement from the 49C I was getting pre-silencer. Keep in mind I am still OC'd at 520/560 (Dell OEM is 500/500). I plan on letting this card burn in for a week before I try any more OCing. I usually keep my comp on 24/7 so I think one week is sufficient. I'll post my results next week. Thanks for the great forum guys!

The fastest stable speeds I have been able to maintain are 540/580. I was hoping for more but that is still pretty good. I tried to bump the GPU up to 560 and 3dMark05 kept freezing and when I tried to bump the memory up to 600 I started to see tears. My score at 540/580 is 6026.
