Well I have a 2nd Gen XPS with the following specs: 3.0 ghz 1024mb ram 16x dvd-rw 8x dvd-rom audigy 2 zs pny 6800gt (modded to 1.4v bios 420/1200) 2 x seagate 160gb 7200 rpm 8mb raid 0 3dmark05: 5,734 3dmark03: 12,204
So I have been looking into overclocking the processor and I took the steps you guys showed in this forum. If I overclock even a little bit, the entire computer locks up and wont shutdown/bootup...so whats up? COuld you guys help me out? Maybe my board has a different chip number? Could it be heat? I dont have any mods to this desktop whatsoever, minus the upgraded hardware!

i think it could be because you are using a raid setup and you are supposed be using IDE instead of SATA.

I figured that....curious as to what speed you are trying to hit. What speed have you hit that has been stable? i hit 3.4 stable. but then tried to go to 3.6 and i got the blue screen of death. tried to turn it back on and it wouldn't boot up. looked at the diognostics lights and said memory error. so took one memory moduole out and fired it back on and everything was fine.

When it does that just pull the power plug out of the chassis power supply arond back. Wait a bit, reconnect, and power the system back up. This gives you a full power reset to the chassis! If the system prmpts you, allow the scan disk to run. This will handle errors caused by lockup with unclosed files.
PS power off....pull the ac ps plug and reinsert your mem stick...then reconnect the ac and you'll most likely reboot just fine ( you did the above sequence when you removed the mem stick ).....you can run the dell diagnostics on the system paying special attention to the memory tests...hmmm..if you deleted the dell diagnostic partition you can run the diagnostics from the dell CD.

I lost the oc here when I installed the sata hdds. The mix of cas3 and cas2.5 mem sticks (went for 2 gigs) dropped the buss to 333 from 400 (the memory is clocked at 4:5 the cpu instead of 1:1) and also killed it. In short, to oc I go with the ide hdd and 2 512 cas3 sticks that came with the puter. The corsair 2.5 peter out around 228+ and I have managed 233-240 with the infineon 3.0. In using the 'fine adjust' your bumping all the system clocks and sata has no tolerance! Onboard device clocks can also be touchy.

Yes....you might be able to go with sata to pata adapters to enable use of the sata hdds and you might also get by using a sata raid card.
