i noticed that u took the origina lfan mountings off what are thosse new mountings and what width are the fans? 38mm or 25mm? thanks I'm still under warranty for 2 years, but i realy wanna install the zalman heatsink. I'm only worried cause if i ever need servcie i'll need to take off zalman and put the preovooues one on.

those are the stock rear fans, so there either 38mm or 35mm. i used thumb srcews to hold the fans in place. if you decide to install it, i can give some pointers to you, there is a little modification that needs to be done to the brackets that zalman gives you. im still under warranty, everything can be put back to stock without dell knowing about it, except maybe my rear fans, i got a little carried away with my dremel ;D

well i got an advantage i got a gen 2 socket 478, so i have no mounting problems. Just put it in as if it was a normal board. we are atually lucky dell motherboard has great space for these heatsinks, so many other brands asus, abit boards can't fit it cause chipset is too close.

how hard is it to get the the original 478 pins out? i heard u have pull quite hard on them.(don't wanna break somethign on the mobo) It may not be hard removing them, but removing them in a manner in which they can be re-used. Its easiest to do with No components attached to the Mobo....but a Beast to say the least... I destroyed mine during th Water cooling phase. I didnt need them, and cutting them off was easier ;D<<<<---Dont Do This T.RoW

IS it best to take it out of the tray then? so u can push them out the other side to help you?

The Pins are secured to the mobo plate, not the actual mobo. Taking the mobo out would make things go alot smoother. Plus your not cutting corners, which can be costly.

well i'm pretty sure i'm done with my ideas for mods my final thing: replace two back fans with 92mm smart blue led put 120mm smart blue in teh front, another 80mm smart in the hdd cage. zalman7700 cu/ac 4" dual uv cold cathode in front for looks (considering) if the cables are long enough, put the rear fans on a bracket like xpsmodz.proboards33.com/index.cgi?board=mods&action=display&thread=1110501254the old 80mm front fan put on the side of the case(closing side), where the black duct is so it blows the hot gfx air stright out the open pci slots next half a year hardware upgrades: oc to 3.6 get lower timed ram 2-2-2 buy the r520s get a razer diamondback( actually almost bought, i'm looking at the ebay auction right now.) Trow, is there any way to extend the thermistors on the original nmb fans?

Trow, is there any way to extend the thermistors on the original nmb fans? You could bend them toward the heat source, though it really doesnt do much. Bridging the Thermistor with a wire, aka Running Max CFM on a widebody highcfm fan....Not Recommended. Very loud, and XPS makes a beeping sound.... Then theres "Toss to the Side". Most valuable thing on the NMB is the 3Pin Connector, IMO. A Thermaltake smartfan with control, offers more flexiblity. Especially for differing scenarios... T.RoW

I messed with placing the nidec thermistors on wire extensions and placing them into the heatsink etc. ( be absolutely sure that the wires don't short out ). They were very responsive but very touchy as to placement. Those thermistors are dumb in that they have no idea when increases in fan speed have no effect other than raising the noise levels nor whether the low air flows and high fan speeds have put the cooling into a 'spin like mad but move little air' mode. You should be able to see them in some of my posted pics. But then I have old unimplented plans for those thingys hehe...
