I have use the m-cubed fan controllers, the T-Balancer and now the bigNG with my 4 Vantec Tornado 4800 RPM fans. The bigNG is safer with 15W fans.
See www.t-balancer.com for more info.
I have a Dell XPS Gen2 the Intel 3.4GHZ hyperthreading processor. I removed all of the plastic ducting, hung one fan over the CPU and the original heat sink using a zalman bracket and a couple of metal screws, screwed an 80mm on to the front of the grille, and simply replaced the 2 rear 92mm nidecs with 92mm Vantec fans. All fans are Vantec Tornados.
So, I can keep my PC as cool really cool if I want it to sound like a hairdryer. On the other hand, the controllers can turn off these fans or run them at really low speeds making them barely audible. You configure the fans to run off of temperature curves or, alternatively, with a target temperature that they try to keep the system at. I've been using curves.
Right now I have the fans barely audible when the CPU temp is below 38C so I don't really try to keep the temp below that. It goes down to 36C or so at this setting if the room is cool. One of the rear fans doesn't even switch on before 38C. The input air is generally 23C or about 74F. The chipset temp always seems to stay in the 30C to 32C range.
The fans ramp up rapidly above 40C and the temps at full load generally go to around 48C or so. The fans are running at 70% at max load. Actually, going to 100% only goes another 3-4C cooler anyway for much more noise.
Should I aim for a lower temperature under load or are temperatures just below at full load 50C acceptable in exchange for less noise? Is it ok to go a bit higher for even quieter operation? I wouldn't feel comfortable running at 55C at full load although I don't normally run at full 100% cpu utilization. :-)
