alright, this is a crazy story that is still being written as we speak. Here it goes.
So I am playing on my comptuer one day, just like I do everyday. I have just overclocked my graphics card to 526.50/529.50 core/mem and got a great score on 3d05 (5851). Then, my computer just turned off. It was really weird because the light on the right of the computer was still blinking amber when I looked at it. It was like it was in a special mode of sleep.....one that it couldn't wake up from (what we call death).
It keeps happening, as sooner and sooner until I can't even get into windows before it shuts down. What is worse, the boot.ini and hal.sys files are corrupted now that I have booted my computer without success so many times. I go into dell diagnostics and run test, but it ikeeps failing. Finally I get into MS repair and am able to repair the files....
I finally call it quits and call dell after repeated turn-offs. they make me take out my cards and all this stuff, even the memory modules but it still keeps happening. Well, when I take out my gfx card, it doesn't but dell said that the computer wont post wihtout the gfx card, so thats kinda cheating.
Dell says they will send me parts and a tech to fix the problem. The timeframe that this occurs in is almost a week. What is great is that dell sent out the parts at 10 PM thursday night and they were at the tech by friday, who called me and got a scheduled repair with me today. W00t.
They send just about everything out. A new power supply, a new mobo and a new processor. The reason I think it was the PSU was because I had an old HP Pavillion that acted the exact same way (it would randomly turn off), and it turned out the cheapo e-machine power supply went bad. The only difference was that the power supply in the HP was going on 4.5 years of age and was 110W and this power supply is 3 months old and 460 watt. WTF. He replaces everything with no avail. The thing cant even config the DHCP protocol on the mobo without the thing turning off. F***.
After the guy leaves I turn it on again and it boots up fine. I go to move the mouse and keyboard, but nothing responds. The num/caplock work so i know there is power and stuff, but I realize my mouse isn't plugged in. I plug it in and the computer starts to install drivers for it but it turns off again.
I try it just one more time, and its worked ever since. wtf. i have no idea whats going on but have a hunch it might be the gfx card. my roomie just happens to have a pcie computer as well with an x300 and if it starts acting up we'll switch cards to see if its really the culprit.
bottom line, though: dell has some nice xps service and at-home repair. everything has been a breeze on my end at getting new parts, and quick too. i just hope i wont need the service anymore, i mean the computer is only 3 months old.... (to be continued)
