Okay.... I just ordered my first Dell! I've been building my own rigs for about 10 years now, but when someone turned me on to that 40% off sale last week I just had to jump on it and order me one. I was able to configure a killer rig for a very small price!
I see from quickly browsing these forums there seems to be some cooling issues with the Gen 3's? Can someone fill me in on this and any other issues I need to be concerned with? Here are the basic specs of the system I ordered:
P4 3.6ghz 2 GB DDR2 X800 XT 256mb PCI-e 148gb WD Raptors in RAID 0 Audigy 2 XP Professional 20" UltraSharp 2001FP
Thanks

Looks like another FPS player, the more the merrier. Id say FarCry is the best game this year, but this year is NOT over until Nov. 17th. T.RoW

And FarCry is a LONG Game. I can admit that there points I thought I would never get passed. I also made the mistake of playing the game one medium my first time thru.
Which I may add is still my first time thru, as in yet to complete due to massive amounts of Rocket launching trigents, coupled with long distance shooting trigents that rarely miss.
Oh and the occasional system lock due to game bugs:D T.RoW

don't like far cry, but everybody raves about it. UT2K4 is the only thing everybody plays (upt to 23 at one party) that got loud, 23 people cussing every time they got fragged. monthly thing. my gen 3 plays while folding, which an AMD can't do, and it beat an area 51 in 3dmark05 Alienware now offer P4 & ATI in their top rig. if u run 3dmark05 a second time the CPU score goes up quite a bit, think the pre-fetch is more accurate. still too hot, as are almost all Dell's. can the P4 really handle over 70C? i would prefer to stay under 55C. the right side of the case gets warm and i put a 10" fan to blow on it until I can get Dell Parts to sell me a fan. day 8 and counting for reply e-mail. Gen3 p4 3.2 1GB 533 X800XT 3dmark05 5100/4550 bog standard. imagine if this forum started a folding team, wouldn't be fair, my one CPU puts out over 1,500 points per week. and it ramps the temps to the max. pax vobiscum

Where you guys playing this UT2k4 20+ lan party at? Tis' one of my favorite series of games, besides HL. Im always down for a frag fest, as long as I dont have to fly. Go Check out this site for ideas on cooling, if you haven't already. 70c for a prescott would worry me, but there know for running hotter than Northwoods, and for having higher thresholds. Another good place for ideas is the Photography section of this forum. Welcome aboard! T.Row "Advocatus Diaboli"

The pinless Prescotts dont get much hotter than typical pinned northwoods. Prescotts with pins, however, are a different story.

definately need a plane to get t o this Island in the Caribbean. that's why cooling is so important. but those mods would void my US$218 3 year warranty about 40 times over. the first picture of what to remove showed the 80mm fan i'm trying to get Dell to sell me. can u put in your service code number and get a part number for me? thought Dell had award winning service. every time i contact them i think of the song "not me bosey"(calypso) maybe they test their machines in a nice 20C airconditioned room!! ambient here is 31C ( during winter its 29.5C) my brother is thinking of buying the 8400 and not the XPS as he just wants it to Colin McRae and e-mail. he hasn't taken my rig for a test drive yet, and he's more into real rally cars. there's hope yet, pity he missed the 40% deal. do alienware's have heat issues now they started using P4's ? will have to ask in our team forum, someone just got one. later

None of the modifications will void your warranty so long as you engineer them to be reversible. One user had a technician at there house, that saw the mods, and said nothing. Also, check out this thread for Warranty User's. T.RoW

Well I received my new machine last night and man is it SWEET! I ended up having only a single bad pixel on my 20in Ultrasharp, it's not a big deal even though the dead pixel is RIGHT DEAD CENTER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SCREEN!!!

Whats the dead pixel count with Dell to RMA the LCD? I thought you had to have like around 6 or so. Lets say you have 1 dead/stuck pixel, you only have 1,919,999 pixels left:D T.RoW
