Hi everyone,
Been lurking the boards since I ordered it on the 14th, and it just arrived today. Got almost the same exact thing UncleMeat did, without XP pro and the 20 inch lcd.
P4 3.6ghz 2 GB DDR2 X800 XT 256mb PCI-e 148gb WD Raptors in RAID 0 Audigy 2
Scored a 12,100 out of the box in 3dmark03.
Hope to start modding the fans and such, and maybe overclocking the card to get a better score.
See you around.

Thanks for the warm welcome.
Can anyone recommend a good program to monitor CPU and Graphics Card temps with a PCI-E chipset? Thanks.

I've also been looking into this but apparently Dell isn't to forthcoming with the SMBIOS layout. Intel has some utilities for their boards that will atempt to install but will hang on some procedure calls when attempting to install the SMBIOS drivers. Simply ending the program in the task manager ends the install with no harm done. Another development effort I've found is for Dell notebooks but doesn't support he desktops at this time. The link is www.diefer.de/i8kfan/ with the full source available if you want to try to determine the SMBIOS layout for the XPS. Good luck and let us know if you find anything! Adam

Hello all. Somebody on the Dell forums posted your url and here I am. Looks good!
I was told Foxconn makes the XPS GEN3 mobo. I've been poking around their site looking for a CPU temp monitor but no luck. Tried an Intel monitoring program and almost had a heart attack when the monitor went dead and all drives and fans went full speed.
Right now I have an old Radio Shack outdoor remote temperture sensor stuck in the top fan outlet grill. It's been as high as 115f while playing Rise of Nations. Right now it's reading 101.5f. I know this is a silly way of monitoring, but hey, you do the best you can with what you've got, right?

Lavasys is an option for temp monitoring that Ive heard/read some people got to work, though Ive seen some that say it didn't. If any member has successfully done this, Please Post a Tutorial and one of the admins will sticky it. Also, Rise of Nations is sweet! Being able to Hotkey 10 Nuke Launchers and launch them 1 after the next is awesome. Cruise missles are cool too, but watching mulitple target cities crumble is sweeeet! Welcome to the Forums! T.RoW

Thanks for the welcome, TRow. Question. Don't you have to put the probe between the heatsink and the cpu? If not, where does it go?
One last question: Where do you recommend I purchase a thermal probe?

Don't you have to put the probe between the heatsink and the cpu? If not, where does it go? One last question: Where do you recommend I purchase a thermal probe? The Thermal probe should be mounted on the Outer Lip of the CPU's Top-Grey Colored Cover(See Pic3), also known as the TIM. TIM = Thermal Interface Material, or what you see the model # printing on the CPU. The CPU Die(Pic 2), where the majority of the heatsource is located, is the Anatomical Center of the CPU. Avoid this Area, as its covered by the TIM for Intel CPU's. Heres a picture I found that better illustrates the do's and don'ts of Installing CPU Thermal Probes. For your situation I would suggest doing Part B, in the Illustration by Installing the Probe on the Heatsink, but using Caution with regards to the CPU Die. Just Remember Outer Lip. ******************************************* As far as which Monitor to buy, that is up to you. Radio Shack has them, as well as online retailers like: Newegg, PCToyland, Coolerguys, and Frozen CPU. If you want to add fans later, which you will when you see how hot your Load temps are, then don't go cheap. ThermalTake and Coolermaster are solid manufacturers. Toms hardware Guide did a good review on some of the latest models available. Some other people may have suggestions as well. T.RoW

Thanks for the detailed info, TRow. Though I've been around computers since the Atari 800, (dating myself here this is truly entering virgin territory. As a matter of fact, that is what I will name this undertaking: "Operation Virgin Territory". Success or failure, I will post back on "OVT". Thanks again, Lanraider

Just tried out Everest, seems like a really cool program, but it can't seem to detect any of my sensors.

Unfortunatly the beta version doesn't detect the sensors on the Gen 3 motherboard either.

Good morning all, I too tried the Lavalys software, it showed all but the tempertures Update on OVT - Purchased the Silver Stone FP52 Thermal Controller from PCToys. Highly recommended by Tom's Hardware. I plan to only hook up the temperture monitors, as the Dell fan controllers seem to be doing a good job without any help from me. If it aint broke, don't fix it The fan controllers on the FP52 shouldn't have to be used in order to still monitor the temps, right? later.

Hello all. Its done! Well, almost anyway. FP-52 is installed and operating like a charm. Using just the thermal probes, I can see that at idle, the cpu stays at 111F. As soon as I start Rise of Nations, the temp immediatly starts to climb, leveling off at 131F. The HDD hovers between 95F and 99F. The system probe, which is at the top of the case, seems to mirror the external probe described earlier. Is that normal, or do you think I need to add another fan?
A word of caution for anyone planning to install the FP-52: The two metal arms that you will attach your rails to, are not perfectly 90 degree angled. They curve in slightly as if trying to form a triangle. If you carefully bend each arm a little past the vertical (to the outside), the unit will slide right in and lock, just like a CD-ROM drive.
Oh, by the way; The Dell fan controllers, by the sound of it, are not full out at 131F. Is that good, or should the fans be full out at that temperature?
Well, that's all for now. Thanks to TRow for his recommendation. Later.

Guys, I got mine 2+ weeks ago. I have found that the ventillation is greatly improved just by adding a few inches off the ground with something like this: 3DMark05 (with August ATI Drivers) 5203 CPU: 4947 3DMark05 with ATI latest Drivers 5215 CPU: 5445 3DMark05 overclocked to 553.50/569.70 5630 CPU: 5070 The wheels cut about 2-3C off the temp, and does make the noise floor lower.. Hmmm....isn't that a protective cover on the DELL shield, used for peventing shipping damage, completely sealing off the intake airflow!!!!! If so it's amazing it even attempts to run 'cool'.

Oh, is this why I saw smoke coming out in the back.... Tell me your joking! Smoke = Bad News, maybe not today or next week, but who knows what permanent damage may have resulted. But, given the case design, and the many gaps in the case, it may not be as serious as it sounds. But smoke? WHOA! T.RoW

TroW, Don't be silly, of course I am joking. I had those shipping stickers on while I was flipping the case around for the wheels. Besides, those stickers does not block the front vents either, just reduce the visual effects. Although you can't see smoke, you will smell some hot copper fumes after the XPS has been cooking for hours.... Paul Tell me your joking!
