Hello, I am a new member of the community and I am very glad to find your site.
First, let me breifly introduce my system before I go on with some questions for all you XPS experts. My system is to be shipped sometime this week.
XPS Gen 3 with P4 3.4 Ghz Extreme Edition
WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL
4 GB RAM
256MB ATI X800 XT
148 GB RAID 0 (74 GB X 2) HARD DRIVES
160 GB SATA HARD DRIVE
2001 FP 20 INCH LCD Monitor (Purchased Separately)
Question 1.
Which socket configuration is the P4 3.4Ghz included with XPS? INTEL shows there are mpLGA478 and LGA775 version available for this processor. Is it 478 or 775?
Question 2.
Will replacing stock CPU heat sink and fan with after market one avoid the warranty? I was looking into COOLER MASTER JET 4 CPU FAN (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-103-142&depa=0). Whether it would avoid the warranty or not, will it fit the space in first place? Also this is for socket 478 P4 configuration. What is your opinion on this cooler? Any other recommendation?
Question 3.
I'm not really into personally modding my computer. However, I do wish to at least swap all the stock fans with high performance aftermarket fans of SAME SIZE. How many total fans are inside XPS? What are their size? I browsed FrozenCPU, CrazyPC and etc and there are so many sizes of fans and I didn't know what size fans to even start looking for. In addition to swap all the stock fans to exactly same size fans (so that it all fits the factory configuration perfectly and I can re-swap them back if I ever need to return it back to DELL), I may want to add just one additional fan somewhere inside the computer to give a little boost of cool air. What kind and size fan do you recommend? And how and where should I put it without leaving traces or avoiding warranty?
Question 3.
Later next year, I might move to a country where 240V power usage is norm. Do I need to manually change PSU setting or will it autosense and adjust its setting automatically?
Question 4.
I hear so may horror stories of DELL Tech support and customer service. I also noted that XPS advertises its special crew of XPS specialized tech team and short waiting time. Is this true?
Question 5.
Looking at my listed specs, will my current stock PSU be enough to support all the power demand? If not, does DELL offer higher capacity PSU for XPS?
That's it for now. I am sorry to blast out many questions at once. I hope someone can answer them. Thank you.
