Hello, My month old XPS sounds very noisy compared to my 8400 even at idle. During game play it is louder than my wife's hair dryer. Sadly, that is not a joke. Most of the noise seems to be coming from the cpu cooling fan. How can I verify that everything is working properly? Is there any diagnostic software to check/adjust fan speeds? The reviews said this unit was very quiet. Peter 3.GHZ P4 500 GB Raid 0 800XT PCI Express

Im new so bare with me but my month old gen3 is pretty quiet unless Ive been gaming for several hours.Even then it will just spin the fans up for a little while then go back to being quiet.
I did open up my XPS the day it arrived and noticed that they had fitted the 56K modem right underneath the video card blocking most of the airflow around it.Ripped that out straight away. Dunno might be something worth checking?.

what are your ambient temperatures? also, if your CPU fans are revving up, check the location of your computer. I had mine in the corner of a room, pushed back against the wall and what was happening was the computer was spewing out the hot air into the wall and it was being sucked in again as fresh air, thus ruining any hope for effective cooling. By moving my computer about 10 inches from the wall and elevating it a bit, I think my computer is probably about 30dB most of the time (enough that I can here it but by no means intrusive on my computer experience =D)

Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, I have no modem to move. There is 1 empty slot between the sound card and the video card. I'm not sure that it really affects airflow. I'm not motivated enough to go to water cooling but any recommendations for quieter fans and a quieter aftermarket cpu cooler would be helpful. Peter

I just spent an hour on the dell forum and I found out that if you have the heat exchanger replaced it solves the problem almost everytime. I just contacted Dell suport and asked them to come replace mine. They have already replaced the fans and the motherboard, so why not try the heat exchanger. There is also a group that feel that using arcticsilver was a good way to reduce the fan noise. I'll post more once the heatexchanger has been replaced.
