first off i wanted to ask if the dell motherboard will be compatible with this heatsink. Also, i wanted to know if anyone has any opinions on recomendable cpu heatsinks i can use to replace the standard one that came in my dell xps gen 3. I am asking because as of late, my comp has been making tons of noise, and i bought an ati silencer 4 and installed it, but the noise is still there and i believe it is my cpu heatsink. my comp is 2 years old and i only got 1 year warranty, so i need to get a new heatsink asap.

<edit> - oops -- this looks similar to the stock heatsink for the Gen 3 -- my mistake. Anyways, if you need a new heatsink then this should work. No sense in replacing if yours is OK, though.

Don't quote me, but I believe this Dell heatsink will also fit the 8300, 8400, XPS gen1, (maybe gen2 or 3), SC420, 400SC, GX280 and maybe some others with appropriate fan/shroud and/or dell heatsink clip. I'm getting one for my XPS gen 1 (except now its a Dimension 8300 since it had a sound chip and I reflashed the bios to activate it-- see the Gen 1 forum), and I've already got the fan shroud from an SC420 (it fits) and the fan from a 400SC (fits shroud) all in an SC420 case. All of these motherboards have a similar footprint and CPU location. also check out poweredgeforums.com site for many threads on fans and cooling the SC420 and 400SC. theres lots of good info there.
