My rig is in my sig. Three weeks ago the OEM drive died and I RMA'd it. I bought two 160GB Drives from WD, 16MB RE editions. I installed one. Less than a week later the second drive in my RAID group died, thus making me happy that I bought two from New Egg. This now allowed me to have both RE drives in my RAID group. Last weekend one of them died. WTF. That is 3 drive failures in less than a month. Does anyone have any opinions why this could be happening? Too much heat? Crappy drives? Bad mobo? Obviously my Dell warranty is no longer valid.
I've invested a lot of $$$ into my XPS and would hate to junk it....

hmms....you could monitor the hdd temps and there are WD diagnostics available for dl.....dunno if they can be used on individual drives in a raid.....you can also monitor the smart drive data. any association with cables or motherboard connectors??any chance of getting a failure analysis report back from WD on the rma'd drives? Getting to the nitty gritty of system issues isn't always that easy...but at least the hdds are downright cheap these days! Other than that testing hdds can take days n days and some programs usually just can't find the error issues.....beware voltage levels sagging during initial turn on when everything is comming up and the hdds are starting up....they draw a lot of power on initial start up...you might also look at trying a redistribution of the molex power connectors for the hdds and dvd drives ( also disconnect reconnect all the connectors in the power wiring from the power supply to chassis lead in ( after power off and pull the ac plug ). You might also try running a non raid configuration for 30-60 days. Enough rambling ..... glhf

Hmmms....I don't recall a gen3 supporting hdd command queing....if such is the case you can try disabling it with a wd utillity download....think I also recall raid issues if a member of the set has it and another doesn't. (Ditto for sata II)
