Hi,
My xps gen 3's fans are constantly running and from what had been said in another thread, along with what I see with my heatsink, I think that my heatsink is also one of those defective Foxconn heatsinks.
Here are the symptoms that my heatsink shows:
1) Cool air coming out of the back of the case (cool fan-exhaust).
2) After 1 hr of heavy cpu-load, the heatsink fins are cold on the top side of the heatsink.
3) My heatsink is "Made in Taiwan" (Foxconn is a Taiwanese company).
I went ahead and bought a replacement heatsink on e-bay, but I ended up getting another heatsink that didn't work (it happened to be another heatsink that was made in Taiwan).
The copper tube-ends on BOTH defective heatsinks are in the "staggered" orientation on top:
X X O O O X
X = cone-shaped ends O = round ends
However, the tube-ends on the new heatsink are all copper-color, while the tube-ends on the old heatsink are silver (for the cone-shaped ends) and copper-color (for the round ends).
NOTE: The new heatsink is seated correctly with Arctic Silver 5 [I've tried installing it using both the method given on arcticsilver.com & the unofficial method, using a piece of plastic to spread a thin layer along the heat-spreader]. I've also cleaned out the dust from the case & fans. But the exhaust case-fan is still going nuts.
Have any of you guys - who've had this problem - ever have a "Made in China" heatsink that was that was defective?
