Wow, got mine last night and plugged the bad boy in....
After reading all the posts on the Gen3 I was prepared for this unit to be quite LOUD.... This case is great - it is so well ventilated and with the power supply completely seperated all that heat is not even a concern. Was it loud...read on...
Well they must have done something from gen 3 to 4 because mine is very quiet - even running 3D games. I am replacing a fully loaded Dell 8200 and it was louder. It's pretty cool how the X850XT PE Spins faster at start-up (like a turbocharger) and very quickliy slows down.
The airflow seems great and the fans under the "Big Green Shroud" are huge!! I hear they are bigger but slower RPM fans than previous versions of the XPS to lower the sound level - not sure if this is true.
I was also impressed by the Cooler with the heat pipes - is there a chemical in this cooling system?..... It appears this cooler is far superior to the "stock" cooler that Intel shipps with the new Prescott processors. And it appears to work well becouse I can feel a significant amount of heat being expelled from the rear of the case - it's doing its job!!
A question:
When I started installing a few games my DVD ROM would hang up and stop intstalling when I inserted the second disc of a 5 disk set. I tried numerous times and had to install through the DVD Writer (much slower reading of the discs). It did the same thing installing Microsoft Office. I called Dell support & we did a few tests and tried to install another game with multiple CDs and this did not happen again. I hope this does not become a problem. Dell thinks that since there are no entries in the event viewer error log and the second game installed correctly that the drive is not the issue, must be a nearly bad install disk.
Any ideas on how to stress or completely diagnose the DVD ROM , I want to ensure it will work long term.
