I'm wondering if the XPS 4 can handle this video card? Will the power supply be powerful enough? How big is the PSU in the Gen 4?
I'm thinking about upgrading my video card. Thanks in advance.

VCraig (at Dells fourm) has a gen 4 and does not seem to be having a problem running that card and so far it has run fine on my Gen5.
Here is the data off the Gen4 power supply that was posted over at Dells site. +5v= 35 0A +12v_A= 17 0A +5vfp= 2 0A +12v_B= 17 0A -12v= 0.8 A +3.3v= 40 0A
The total output on both+12v rails is 34 amps. Also the Gen 4 and Gen 5 have the same power supply as far as output goes.

what's the wattage rating on the Gen4?

450 watts.
I just put the 650 watt power supply in my Gen5 (it will not work in the Gen4) and it does seem to help keep the card cooler but it did not help me get a higher 3Dmark 05 score.
I put the card in about 6 weeks ago and it's run fine and as long as you do not try to overclock the card really high it's going to be OK. I overclocked my XTX card to 660 gpu 670 memory and ran FEAR for 3 hours with out any problems.
Just keep an eye on the temps. From ATI. Normal Idle temp = mid 50's C. Normal safe maximum load temp = 80C to 90C. Failure at 120C max. (which in my opinion if you're seeing full load temps above 90C, you're in trouble).

With the 650 watt power supply in I ran CCC and the overclock program pushed the card to 689 gpu and 797 ram and did this with the card never getting over 61C.

Just to clarify, are you saying the x1900xt won't work in the Gen4... or are you saying the psu that you have won't work in it? thanks!

The 650W power supply that I got for the Gen5 will not work in the Gen4. The X1900 will work in the Gen4 .

i have an XPS Gen 2 with the same 460watt PSU that every other XPS prior to the 650watt PSU has...
and the 460watt PSU has a max voltage output of 240watts (take it off and check the specs yourself) and i was unable to power a 7800gs (350watt PSU req)
so to answer your question, i don't think so

You can also look at getting a high powered atx power supply and hacking it into the top rear of the chassis. You would need adaters ( 24pin to 20 pin ) and perhaps some sata to molex coverters. There are pushed out deformations and lips all over in the early XPS where Dell installed other gear based on the machine model and cofiguration. I think that top section was used for a large scsi raid card.

Do you have a preferance over ATI or NVidia? I replaced my 6800gto with a XFX 7900gt exteme in May 06, and haven't had a single problem.

I put my X1900XT in my Gen3 and it works like a charm. however, i do notice that my computer is WAYYYY bottlenecked by my processor. Its actually quite sad. However, my water cooling setup is TIGHT. Got the Tyee waterblock so this baby never gets over 44C. Noice.
I plan on going to conroe soon, so this may be the end of my XPS. Its beena great 3 years that I have had this computer, but perhaps its just time to move on *tear*.
No more proprietary fan connectors, no more proprietary case and motherboard and power supply. Overclocking enabled? Sure, ill take it. I think I have just outgrown my XPS, but thats okay. Now the parents get to benefit from my new rig.
