As a follow up to my CPU fan noise on an XPS Gen5: 1. Technican arrived at 5:00pm today with box full of refurb parts -- motherboard, cpu, power supply, fans, heat sink, and so forth. 2. Technician listened to PC running with 'jet-like" sound effects 3. He opened case, removed CPU fans and said "Oh, hear is the problem". 4. The Heat sink had not been properly seated during assembly. The paste was completely dry. 5. Replaced Heatsink using Artic Sliver as paste. 6. PC is now whisper quiet during intense gaming. 7. Tech said CPU fan go to high for up to two minutes when CPU gets hot. He said there is something wrong if they dont cool the CPU in that time and go back to a slow speed.
Nice : ) I just wish Dell tech support had not been so inadequate and misinformed. The onsite tech was on contract. He was very good and helpful.

I had a XPS Gen 5 for 2 weeks and then returned it to get the new XPS 600 SLI.
Anyway, it had a noise problem. And I think it had to do with the processor fans and the way they are installed in the case. I called DELL and they told me that the processor shroud or something were not properly adjusted and that many people have complained about case noise. You could get rid of the noise by pushing the right panel to the left and the noise would go away (there are two black panels that have the big DELL logo on it. I'm talking about the one on the right) The noise would comeback every time you turned off you computer and then turn it back on, though. I think it has to do with the position of the case and how even the surface the case sits on is.
I'm pretty sure the noise was caused by the vibration the fans produced. The best solution to the problem would be to sit the bottom of the case on a rubber base. That way all the vibrations and oscillations produced by the fans would be isolated or absorbed, for lack of a better word, by the rubber base.
