Anyone have a XPS 5 yet? I don't even know if they're being sold yet. I've seen a few reviews online though.

I think Dell was having problems supplying the new dual core processors so the availability is in serious question. Reminds me of my Gen3 just last year....=D. Its crazy to think that theres now a gen5 after only one year....

Well, I just ordered it 2 days ago. So it won't be long before I'll be kickin' your butt! ;D By the way, I got 25% off this system because Dell had accidentally put an image of the GEN 4 on the GEN 5 configuration page with a 25% tag on it. I got the salesperson to honor it. Saved me $1,500.00 Semolians!

I'm not really sure... in terms of performance... I think it would be pretty close... what do you need 4Gigs of RAM for?!

Well, if we're talking about just a single app or game's performance, it probably would be pretty close. But when it comes to multitasking apps or apps that spin off threads to run other processes, it should be significantly faster. I'm not really that much of a gamer but a developer. I run a bunch of apps at the same time, often running pretty processor intensive things in the background. Some of the apps I use, like Photoshop for example, can burn up tons of ram expecially when editing large images. I don't want to get to the point where I'm using the swap file if I can help it. Thus the 4 gigs of ram. I'm moving up from an 8250 with a 2.8 GHz Pentium 4, so it should be pretty sweet! The Raptors alone should make quite a difference, as I'm sure you know

You'll love those raptors..... I just wish they were higher capacity. Well, if we're talking about just a single app or game's performance, it probably would be pretty close. By the way, why did you crap on your hard drives? 7,200 RPM? ;D You'll love those raptors..... I just wish they were higher capacity. Ya that would be nice, but I just ordered a 400GB SATA drive to put in as a storage drive, so I should be in good shape.

Now now guys, play nice. Everyone uses their computer for different things. However, as with most things, computer components have tradeoffs. High-end graphics cards are wayyy more expensive. High speed drives run much much hotter than their slower counterparts. The story just goes on....still, that dual core is bi*chin.

;D
Just got mine Friday. Been getting it up to speed.
Starting to load games tomorrow....
First impressions:
Very quiet, impressively fast boot, ATI Radeon X850 XT very impressive so far in some prelim tests.
I'm really disappointed I can't overclock it. I have the 3.2, but I thought all models could be overclocked. Read a review saying it could be. Do I have to pull down CPUFSB to overclock it?

Mine is coming in next Friday. I went all out. got the 3.8GHz Processor with 2 MB Cache , and 4 Gigs ram along with the 1 Terabyte HD, 500 Gig Secondary and 300 Gig External, all underneath the 24inch digital flatscreen with dual tuners and remote. maxed out everything for around 5 grand. My wife wants my head on a pole, but then women don't understand the need for a good gaming machine do they?

thanks.. I usually go around 5 years between computers. this one is to replace the woefully slow 1.3MgH compaq Presario with 1.3 GHz ram, 60 gig HD, and 15 inch monitor. it was a good system for its time (2001), but i had been finding games like Doom3 and Need for Speed Underground 2 were just out of my processor range.. Well that's soon to be history, but it is killing me that I have to wait till the 21st for it to get here!!!

Damn what a machine!! Since it is already a Gen 5, I think dell knows what they are doing. i think the cooling should be more than plenty. May i ask, what are you doing with 1.5 terabites of space??? i take it you do a lot of vid editing, especially with 4gb of ram.
