i've tried everything, for some reason i cannot enable dma for my drive, in the xps gen 5 there is "1" ide channel, to use with 2 drives, my device 0 (dvdrom) is set at dma mode 2, my device 1 ( dvdrw) is set at pio mode, i tried setting it to dma but when i do, it doesnt want to change, when i reboot, i even tried doing it in safe mode, And i tried calling dell and they couldnt do anything either, they had me do some registry settings to try and enable it, but nothing!!, oh and both drives are set to Cable Select btw, any help would be appreciated TIA

Were you doing it via control panel\device manager\IDE ATA ATAPI controllers and using the appropriate primary/secondary advanced settings transfer mode set to DMA if available?

While powered down and having the AC power cable disconnected, switch the drive order via the ide cabling. If you haven't had it in that configuration before xp will redetect them both. I had that issue for a short time on my gen1 but can't recall the details of what got me past it. You might also try setting them manually via the configure jumpers to master and slave (master at the end and slave in the middle).
