Heres a funny one... I just got my XPS gen5 today and I turn it on for the first time and get a an error message where it says my RAID drives failed to load... so after waiting about 30 mins to and hour I finally got a XPS tech and he made me open up my system and take the green shroud off the hard drive bays... only to find that the connector on the first hard drive was disconnected... I was happy to find out it was only a coneection probelm and not something worse... So I continued to put thte green plastic shroud back on the bays but find out the cables connected to the hard drives is too short and when the shroud is placed back on it pulls the cable off the first drive... so after talking with the tech and tryin to get some more slack out of the wires I was unable to do so.... all in all he is sending someone to install a new power supply with longer cables into my 2 hour old system... and what made me laugh is that he said I was the THIRD XPS customer in a row to call him about the same problem with their "new" system.....

ya it is definitly a bother...... I was thinking though doesnt that shroud help circulate air around the drives... I havent taken a real good look but arent there fans in front of the HDD's blowing air across them, and the shroud keeps the air enclosed???

well if it's like the gen 4 which i think it mostly is.. then no all the shrouds seem to be a hinderance.. if i can find all mine ill take pics and tell you why, but in general HD shroud keeps hot air. Black thing for the side fan has 1 tiny hole to bring air in from the front. and the CPU shroud makes a waste of one of the fans and hindered the amount of air that can actually pull over your hardware. personally i say get ride of them all. but thats a personal choice

I believe that unknowngod's post about the hard drive shroud is correct, and similarly with the side shroud. I took both of those off as well, and it really gave me a lot of space in the case.
As far as the CPU shroud, though, I think it does force air over the CPU heatsink. I don't have experience with the Gen4/5 but I know it helps my gen3. I actually reversed the nidecs so they both pushed air out of the case and then took off the cardboard so it just pulls all it can across the CPU sink. With my fan controller I get a few degrees C better temps.
I hate to hear about your busted gen5, though, totally sucks
