I just bought an XPS Gen 5 case off of Ebay that looks immaculate and brand new as it was stated. I'm going to build the computer gradually for a friend(as funds permit :) ) I do not have the Motherboard yet, just the case. Does the power supply ONLY function when it is connected to a motherboard? Reason being is I plugged in the power cable to the power supply and the the fan didn't spin up or anything like my fulluy working Gen 2. The power button in the front didn't light up either and nothing happened when I pressed the power button in the front. I'm guessing it's because it needs a motherboard to even power on because there's nothing to control the fan speeds, etc. Is this the case or does it mean the powersupply is dead?

Your correct in that the power supply needs logic on the motherbaord to initiate a power up. There are means of turning a motherless power supply on, usually done with a test connector. I likely have some notes on making one on the hdds here if you require the information, but it's usually best to have operational loads when turning power supplies on.

What type of power supply does the XPS 600 use? Is it ATX, or BTX? I have been googling for a while now and cant find a detailed pic of the XPS600 Pwr supply. I am thinking of buying one of these 600 cases off Ebay to build a system. Thanks
