Yes, Completely out in the open, it is sitting on an old Gateway tower, Over 1 ft open in the back, open in the front, there should be no problem with airflow, that's why I am concerned. I just did the Dell diag on the hd and it passed
I am also working with a friend of mine in Austin that works for Dell.
I do appreciate your help. Steve

Is your vid card exhausting hot air into the chassis? Try cracking the side door open at the back about an inch as an interim measure. A pic of the clamshell opened would help a bit. The whole peak on the temp above about 44c shouldn't be there! For reference...68-72f room temperature while browsing on the xps gen1 here:

Post the results of your dell support session....airflows in the xps are a bit tricky.....from the xps600 service manual it appears the air for the hdds is accpmlished by the fan in the card cage cooling fan and ductwork mounted on the inside of the access panel and the rear cover of the hdd cage. Have you gone to the hdd manufacturers website to get thermal specs on your hdd make and model yet? current local weather forecast here : www.wrh.noaa.gov/total_forecast/?map.x=75&map.y=76&dgtl=1&wfo=mso&zone=mtz001&county=MTC053&mapzone=mtz001

cruiser I am begging to wonder if the problem doesn't lile in the heat senson. How can this hd be at 45C the minute I boot up . I mean the the exact minute?
I will keep you updated within the next day or 2 as soon as I hear back from Dell XPS.
If push comes to shove, I will have them replace this mobo first.

The sensors are simple things.....getting the value via mathematical manipulation is a bit more complicated. The hdds take a heavy power flux during the initial power up sequence, but the sensor should be somewhere slightly above room temperature. One has to determine what sensor s are available on the Dells and a program that reads them appropriately. Then it's decision time as to whether or not to attempt changing the cooling to suit your own requirements or just go with what your system came with. Both carry consequences which need to be looked at. Needles to say, the less a user knows about their system's thermals the fewer calls they make! If they go with doing an hdd replacement (per my experience) you'll lose the factory information and have to do a complete install. You will also have to ship the old one back or pay the price they set on it. It's seldom price competitive with the market place. If you end up going this route I would recommend you add the replacement drive as a second drive for awhile and see what the temps are. 250gb satas are running in the 100-150 dollar range currently. Has Dell issued an incident number to you yet. You can check the status of it if you did via the Dell user support. Without it your without any reference to having made the calls at a later date. manufacturer and model number of the hdd you are currently running is ??

With your expressed concern for data and having to do a rebuilt, I would highly recommend getting a matching hdd and migrating to a raid1. I run a pair of wd250gb satas here and just manually copy files over while doing dvd backups of files. WD's website has specs and various diagnostics which you can download. At least one reads all the smart data off the drive. It was the first thing I did when I received my hdds. General www.wdc.com/en/index.asp?Language=enI even did a burn of their diagnostic cd iso image file. You might request Dell send you another matching hdd and walk you through doing a conversion to a raid1. That would give you a second hdd for temperature readings, an auto backup and rebuild, and help isolate the problem while not requiring an onsite service call yet! PS maybe they won't even charge you for it even if you end up keeping it. XPS techs had a lot of leeway during the gen1/ gen2 era. Have you verified that all fans are blowing air and blowing it in the right direction?

XPS techs are very interesting to work with, it seems that the high strung heavy accented India's aren't working there. It seems much more relaxed plus they know that normally they are not dealing with dummies. I will ask them about what you said with the 2 drives but you know they are not going to give it to me for free. I will not pay their prices for a hd that I can get cheaper. Maybe not the EXACT same drive, but damn close. My computer expertise lies is dealing with Mal-ware. If you get infected I usually can get it out with my tools. I am afraid to say that putting in a hd I would have to be walked through, but it's time I learned it. So the journey continues, but at least now they are listening to me. cruiser- thanks for you help. Steve

We have figured it out. Since Speed Fan and MBM5 don't have this exact ha in their data base, hence their readings are off Everest reads this drive at 44C I spoke with the head of hd's in the America's today. Connections do pay off. He said if this drive was that hot, melting plastic would be a big issue. I can put my hand on the green covering of my drives and it is not that hot. So my temp is in the mid 40's Cruiser and all that have helped me I thank you! Zbestwun2001
