First, the background.
I just bought and Dynex 32" 720p TV 2 weeks ago and have been frequently hooking up my computer to the TV via HDMI because I have some vertical lines on my screen. Completely different story. Now when I got the TV, it was plug and play. I hooked it up to my xps, hit the CRT/LCD key combo and I was good to go; just the right resolution, everything perfect.
Anyways, today, I got the latest windows update, Service Pack 2. Then, when I rebooted and tried to hook up to my TV, the Fn+F8 wouldn't do the trick. So I tried doing it through the control panel. Still no cigar. So then I think, maybe the Service Pack messed something up. So I went over to update history and uninstalled the service pack and rebooted. Still nothing. I tinkered some more, and couldn't get any results, so I went on over to the Dell website and downloaded the nvidia drivers.
Now, whether or not I had these drivers before, I can't remember. But I do know that it began to get me in the right direction. Finally I could see part of my desktop on the TV. However, the edges of the screen were clipped enough to have no windows toolbar at the bottom and no upper frame of a full-size window, not to mention the sides clipped. I tried adjusting the resolution across the scale and couldn't get the edges to come in. Then I opened up the Nvidia control panel and found a "resize desktop" option under the HDMI TV section. I got it to where it wasn't clipping anymore, but now I'm straining my eyes very badly to see the type at 1920x1080 pixels. So I back off the resolution as far as it will let me with my screen resized (1440xI forget). My eyes are still straining, but not quite as badly. I wouldn't complain about the resolution if I were just watching movies or editing pictures with the TV, but the majority of my computer use is with it hooked up to the tv, since I have ugly lines down the middle of my screen.
My question is this. Why was it plug and play with perfect settings when I first got the TV, but something changed along the way (whether it be with the Service Pack 2 or something else) and now I had to spend a little over 2 hours trying to get it set right? Is there anyway to get it back to the way it was?
I'm now ending my diatribe, I'll be much obliged with any ideas you guys might have.
