I had a good 4 days trying to figure out what was wrong with my system. Turns out an application (Dell CinePlayer) was at fault for causing my XPS 710 to fault with a Blue-Screen-Of-Death (BSOD).
Here's my story: - I got the BGF GeForce 9800 GT OC PCIe2.0 for XMas (awesome card). - Plug it in, update the drivers, no problems so far. I was able to play all my favorite games without errors (the fan noise is even lower than my 7900GS). - I then tried to play a DVD movie. The disc doesn't even start to spin that I get a BSOD, stating the nv4_disp.dll is the culprit. - I fidled for hours. Uninstall sound cards, re-installed old video card (to make sure that DVD movies were working), etc. - The reveal came when I got a clean hard disk, and started installed WinXP from scratch on it, with the new card in the system. From fresh, WinXP Media Edition can't play DVD movies: you need codecs. So I installed Dell Sonic Cineplayer and my system crashed. I un-installed Cineplayer and installed KLite Codecs: the sytem did NOT crash... Needless to say I was delighted. - I reverted to my original WinXP hard disk, un-installed Cineplayer and everythink is fine now.
I hope this helps someone in the future.
Cheers!
